Apple Crumble

Everyone has an apple crumble recipe. It must be one of the easiest "sweets" to make, and almost impossible to make badly! Do pay attention to the kind of apple you are using. Choose an apple with "tang" - like Granny Smith - or a firmer texture, like Gala. Delicious - red or gold - apples tend to be sweeter and softer when cooked so you add less sugar. Use brown sugar, lime juice on the apples. A hint of cinnamon in the crumble is optional. Here's a very basic version, with the simplest ingredients. As you make more crumbles, you'll know how much or how little sugar you should use.

Apples, Granny Smith or firm sour apples, 4, peeled, cored and sliced
Brown sugar, half cup
Lime, half, squeezed over the apples and brown sugar

Crumble topping:
Butter, lump about one tablespoon
Flour, half cup
Brown sugar, one third cup

Make the "crumble topping" by mixing together the butter, flour and brown sugar until you have small pebbly bits.

Turn on oven to 350 degrees, or medium-hot. Put the apple, brown sugar in an oven proof bowl. Squeeze lime juice over. Spread crumble topping over the apple mixture. Bake in hot oven for an hour. The topping should be brown and the apple mixture soft and "saucy." Cool and serve with ice cream. Or with coffee for breakfast.
Apple crumble with strawberry ice cream. Hmm, good!

  3. I can attest to the fact that this is delicious! I had it last week in Tobago! Thanks!!!

An alternative for a diabetic diet is possible too. Don't use any sugar on the apples, and add raisins, prunes and walnuts or pecans in the crumble instead of the sugar. It tastes delicious too!
